1. Background information:

Teaching content: unit 1Art,from New Senior English for China book 6;

Class Type: Reading    

Period: Period 1

Duration: 45mins

2. Teaching objectives:

(1)Knowledge objectives:

Students can know about the history of western painting and their feature;

Students can grasp and apply some words and expressions about paintings, such as abstract,realism,impressionism…

(2) Ability objectives: Students can the students to talk about the styles of western paintings;

(3) Emotional objectives: students can appreciate the beauty of painting and love art;

(4) Culture awareness: students can have a general idea about Chinese painting and western painting.

3. Teaching important and difficult points:

(1) Teaching important points: grasp the main ideas and features of different styles of western painting

Teaching difficult point: describe western paintings according to its styles

4. Teaching aids: Blackboard, PPT

6. Teaching Procedures:

Step 1:Greeting & Lead-in:

Enjoy some Chinese paintings and Western paintings;

Compare Chinese paintings and Western paintings to answer the 2 questions:

Q1:Which do you think has a greater change?

Q2:Why does the style of west paintings change a lot at different times?

Step 2:Fast reading

A.Read the passage fast and answer the following questions:

(1. Why the title is a short history of western painting?(Para)

(2.How many styles of Western painting are mentioned in the text? What are they? (headings)

B. According to these two questions to summarize what’s the main idea of the text?

Step 3:Careful Reading

a. Look at the 4 pictures in the textbook and tell the names of them and their painters? Answer the following question:

Do you know which period these paintings belong to?

b. Listen to the recording of each paragraph and fill in the chart below on the characteristics of the paintings in each period (time period; theme; style, Painting technique; Artist )

c. Quiz:

According to the characteristics of the paintings in each period, can you guess which period the following 4 paintings belong to?

d. Finish the task (group work)

4 paintings contain 4 tasks for students. 4 students a group finish the task.

The Middle Age:

(1. What were the artists interested in from 5th to 15th century AD?

(2. How did Gitto di Bondone paint his paintings?

The Renaissance: How about two important discoveries in this time of period?

Impressionism: enjoy the song Starry Night and finish the following task

(1.What is the social background of this period?

(2.Why did some people dislike this style of painting?

Modern Art:Please imagine what painting styles there will be in the future after class.

Step 4: summary and thinking time

What can you conclude from the short history of western art?

(Set the example for students and let them think about it after class.)

7. Homework:

Can you create a painting ?

Choose any painting style, and try to create your own painting according your understanding.
